“Love is beautiful.
I had always dreamed of one day finding my soul mate. The one who would make my heart explode out of my chest with one glance … and my entire body titillate with just one touch.
Like everybody, I sought the true partner without whom existence would not make sense…
I knew not everybody was lucky enough to find that unique person. But what I had not anticipated was what would happen if that soul mate turned out to be the one person I could not have.
Although true love is entirely subjective so far as the person is concerned, shouldn’t everything else be regarded objectively?
What if our love for one another was unconditional and our union could not possibly hurt anybody? Would that still be wrong?
How could I possibly let go of my other half? The empty space his absence would leave in my chest would be unendurable and would reduce me to nothing.
My body was devoid of any force as I felt my knees give out from under me and I crumbled to the floor.
Please somebody … help me. Coldness penetrated my body as it slowly began to numb, my thoughts exploding my mind until they finally led toward a darkness in which I could feel I was losing my soul. I knew nobody could ever save me from the dark…”

From KIRKUS REVIEWS.
First-time author Schonbeck offers a romance tale based around a great taboo.
Shortly into the book, Schonbeck delivers a shock to her readers—protagonist Rose is in love with her brother Robert, and her feelings are not unrequited. There’s nothing to mitigate the situation—they are not long-lost siblings, nor were they separated at birth, distant in age or raised thousands of miles apart. They are a brother and a sister as most readers understand those terms, and they are in love. While the author smartly takes care to keep intimate scenes from becoming graphic, interspersing other scenes with the love scenes between Rose and Robert, which keeps sensitive readers from rejecting the book outright based on its controversial subject matter, she does not shy away from much in her handling of this incestuous relationship. Rose wants to be with her brother, and she’s willing to pay whatever the price might be. Robert, on the other hand, thinks that their attraction, and any relationship stemming from it, is wrong and he resists pursuing it. His resistance, however, does not stop him from having several passionate nights with Rose. As the story progresses, Rose and Robert, who are both lawyers, find themselves on opposite sides of a dangerous drug-trafficking case. Schonbeck expertly builds the narrative’s tension, between the siblings and in the case, and Rose and Robert’s precarious situation becomes increasingly dangerous. Despite being involved in such a culturally inappropriate romance, these are believable characters who have friends, try to date other people, enjoy their work and relate to their family. In this sense, the author grounds the novel in realism rather than relying on the shock value of incest to keep the pages turning. Schonbeck writes the romance well while also building and holding a dramatic tension that must, and does, eventually break in the only way that it could.
For readers who can swallow their repulsion at the idea of incest, this is a romantic, thoughtful read that could make them reconsider the meaning of love.

My Heresy eBook Maryam Schonbeck

I am noticing so many authors have the nerve to write incest stories but kill the males off through suicide or homicide. Pointless and cowardly. Like as difficult the taboo why not show what would occur in real life. Especially since fiction imitates life. The female character here was annoying and stupid most of the time. She came across as an idiot cause she never listened nor respected her brother. Overall there were times I went through so many emotions wondering how it would end...hated the ending mainly because since it was consensual..rejection of the relationship would have added or having them moving forward against the odds would have made me give 5 stars. But you safely killed off an interesting character...I like that it's not a typical read..hope to see more work from this author

My Heresy eBook Maryam Schonbeck Reviews

Didn't know what to expect, lots of fun going around familiar haunts on the French Riviera, then got dragged into a love affair I don't approve of --- but I found Robert's gentle charm so captivating that by the end I wanted to cry for them, jolly good read!
First off I HATED the ending!!! Even though the relationship was forbidden and illegal I would've preferred that ending to the one where he dies!!! Other then that the book was great Robert was a wonderful man who loved her more than he lived him self
When I started reading this book, I had no idea what was involved. I was totally surprised and shocked. However, the book is well written and the writer makes one become used to the love story very quickly. The story is set on the French Riviera which makes for a fantastic backdrop to this crazy story, especially for those familiar with the area. Although one of the main characters was not my cup of tea, the fact that I wanted to slap him, made the book only more appealing. I had to know what happens in the end - I could feel the tension mounting... A fun read, and a shocking love story!

I read all sorts of books - I enjoyed this one - the area - Cote d'Azur in Southern France was of great interest -and the lovers passion - wow - I found most intriguing !

Right to the end I was not sure how the author was going to deal with this taboo - and - difficult as it was - I guess the ending she wrote was the right way out!

It could have been sordid - but Maryam dealt with the subject - sometimes ( in my opinion) a bit tongue in cheek but in your face - and that is what it is when dealing with a socially un-acceptable subject!

A good read - thank you!

Someone else here or on Goodreads commented on how the sister (h) in this book, only realized she was attracted to her brother after they were adults. When I was reading how it came about, I was like this is the lamest intro to this type of love. If you want to read a book that expounds upon how this type of love can realistically bloom, read Tabitha Sazuma's Forbidden...even VC Andrews , Flowers in the Attic depicts this touchy subject well.

Then the maid for the family just comes into the h's room one morning and spills the beans about knowing how each of them (brother and sister) felt about the other. None of it made sense, sounded like a 7th grader's 1st person account and was totally unbelievable. This book was just "meh" for me...could take or leave it, again , unlike Forbidden, in which I read ravenously in 1 sitting.
